Being sustainable isn’t easy, but it’s possible - when each of us does our part. Middlebury is making that more common every day.
Home of the nation's first undergraduate environmental studies program, Middlebury has set milestones in "green building", local food purchasing, community organizing, and recycling. More than 1,000 alumni work on the leading edge of environmental action, science, policy, and green business worldwide.
The organic garden is managed by students and staff, and provides over 1,200 pounds of fresh produce to the Middlebury community each season.
Middlebury's four decades of environmental leadership turn four years of college into an opportunity: to look beyond the way things are; to share what's possible. And now, to tackle the defining issues of our time: climate change and renewable energy.
What can a liberal arts college do?
Middlebury commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable practices is demonstrated by our new buildings that incorporate energy efficiency, locally harvested, green-certified wood, and by addressing the challenges of becoming less dependent on automobiles and more pedestrian friendly.
Our administrators, faculty, staff, and students are putting their resources (and their passions) into the following categories of sustainable change:
